The Eleanor Leff Jewish Women's Resource Center
NCJW New York Section's Eleanor Leff Jewish Women's Resource Center (JWRC)
documents the modern Jewish women's movement and explores and advances both the changing
roles of women in Judaism and the interplay of feminism and Jewish tradition:
- The JWRC Research Library comprises materials on the history and status of
Jewish women. The collection--more than 15,000 items--includes books, studies,
unpublished theses and dissertations, liturgies, ceremonies and rituals. Naming ceremonies
for girls (brit habat), feminist haggadot, bat mitzvah and egalitarian wedding
ceremonies, healing and "wise women" coming-of-age rituals are among the treasures. The library
is open to the public by appointment.
- JWRC promotes Jewish continuity through special events, holiday celebrations,
workshops and conferences, and the Jewish
Women's Film Festival.
- JWRC publishes works by Jewish feminist writers. Publications include the Jewish Women's Literary Annual, Ladies of Genesis, Set
Against Darkness, Talking with Eve Leah Hagar Miriam, The Third Day, The Sweet Kid From
Warsaw, and Di Froyen: Proceedings of the 1995 Conference on Women and Yiddish.
- JWRC sponsors a book discussion group, a poetry workshop, and other on-going
interest groups with a Jewish feminist focus.
